Option B: Let your cat walk across your keyboard and use the result as your password.
A little while ago, I started trapping failed login attempts to my websites. As a result, I’ve ended up with a list of passwords that automated hacking programs use to try to gain entry to your typical website or blog. So if you’re using any of these… don’t. It’s best to have a few characters other than letters in your password, like a dash, period, or equals sign. Plus, a number or two helps.
“But Ken,” you say, “I see some passwords on this list that have lots of numbers and special characters.”
“Yes,” I reply, “That’s true, but look at how the vast majority of such passwords line up with the order of the keys on your keyboard.”
“I see,” you say, “So !@#$% is actually a lousy password, because the keys are all next to each other, and it’s easy to guess?”
“That’s correct. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll stop writing in the form of dialog.”
Think of something obscure that you’ll remember, but don’t use something personal like a name or date. Add a couple of numbers, capitalize something, and throw in some special characters. For example, maybe you like, er, I don’t know… trees. So you decide to use maple as your password. Too simple. Jazz it up: Mapl3!tr33 or Maple$ap . Remember, passwords are always case-sensitive, so throw in a capital letter somewhere. Even capitalizing the first letter will dramatically increase the difficulty in cracking your password.
Please note that this list is by no means definitive, and your hacker(s) may try different words. But use this list as a guide of words to avoid:
